Types of Safaris

Lets look at the type of safaris or tour that will best suit your level of comfort. This is critical as the last thing you want is to arrive in some African city or town and to find that you have in fact been booked on something you never expected or wanted.

  1. Adventure Camping Safari: This is offered in 2 forms. Private guided or scheduled departure. The private guided safari is more expensive as you are participating in a safari where you have your own private guide with no other strangers on board. This type of safari is great if you are travelling with your family or a group of friends.

The scheduled departure camping safari is a more affordable option as you will be joining other participants from various parts of the world. Each safari has dedicated departure dates to choose from and makes planning far easier. Another benefit is to meet other like-minded persons which establishes lasting friendships.

Take note – camping safari – the type of tour normally involves semi participatory tours where you will be expected to assist in erecting your own tent at each campsite.

  1. Accommodated Tours: These tours, as above, are also offered as a private guided tailor-made safaris or scheduled departure options. The only and biggest difference is that this type of tour offers each participant a fully accommodated option with comfortable Lodges, Chalets, Guesthouses or hotels in the itinerary. No camping will be available. Another difference is the per person price range which is traditionally more expensive than the camping option.
  2. Self Drive Safaris: This type of tour is quite self explanatory. If you are adventurous enough in renting a vehicle and driving yourself, then this option is available in some African countries, but not all. Namibia and South Africa are ideal for this option. Botswana and Mozambique could be a bit more tricky and should only be considered if your are a seasoned traveler to these countries.
